MONEY was initially to be called APART and was going to be the break-up
album of KMFDM.
We split the recording budget between En Esch and myself and both went
to work separately on one side of the album each.(in those days we still
thought of records in terms of an a- and a b-side). When i had finished my side (5tracks) and he had finished his 5 tracks,
we tossed a coin and i got the a-side, he the b-side. We mastered the
album and sent the masters off to waxtrax. then waxtrax called me and
said that apparently a mistake had happened during mastering:
the a-side sounded like KMFDM but the b-side had to be a mixup of some
other artists' material. I assured them that there was no mistake and that that was actually the
way the album was done intentionally. Tthey replied that they wouldn't put it out this way since it wasn't (in
their opinion) a "real" KMFDM record. Iin the end, i had to go into the studio again and record a bunch of new
songs to make it a full album that they'd be willing to release.
The 5 rejected tracks later ended up on CHEESY.
The exact songs on this version aren't listed, but based on Scaha's decription and writing credits on later releases, his songs could have included any of the following: Vogue, Sex On The Flag, Spiritual House, Help Us Save Us Take Us Away, Bargeld, Blood, Spiritual House or We Must Awaken. En Ecsh's songs could have included any of the following tracks on Cheesy, all credited to Esch/Schultz: Cum, Gypsy Queen, Ich Bin, Rule The Mob, Ganola or The Past Is Beyond Recovery.
A few test pressings of Apart were produced, however this version doesn't contain any of the songs En Esch submitted, so it's most likely an interim version between the original submission and the later Money version.
It's still unknown why this version was scrapped, but almost all of the material was later released.
